Letting nature take care of itself

Wildlife

Braemore welcome partnerships with other adjacent areas/estates to share similar goals in the pursue for a more balanced nature.

Braemore is open to investigate opportunities to reinstate areas with key species whom are no longer roaming Scotland but who once helped to balance ecosystems.

The red deer are likely the most prominent species on Braemore. Partly because of their numbers. Around 500 on the 12.000 acres.

Red deer are grazing the grounds and are keeping much vegetation low.

With the enhanced biodiversity this grazing preassure creates.

The aim of management is to ensure the well being of the population and its ability to influence the environment in where they roam. It is important for us to make sure that we have a somewhat even spread in male to female ratio and a somewhat even age distribution. In other words we try to keep the distribution as natural as possible as currently with the guidance of Forest and Land Scotland are performing the task of the predator.

Deer are said by many to have a negative impact. Which in one aspect is true. When they bite and shred their antlers removing plants, they create open spaces for new plants to arrive.

An absolute need for succession and balance but if the material is either to fragile or to few, the negative imbalance will occur.  Such imbalance is for many reasons presents in a variety of locations.

This is why we aim to manage the population with the tools we have been given. We aim to be of inspiration. And we aim to be perceived as responsible and caring. We also aim to become permitted more key specie. in our strive for a larger balance.

It does mean that over time that f.x. The red deer population will decrease slightly in order to give more space to a species like the wild boar etc and likely also to much more woodland.

Ptargiman

Today Braemore is holding a permanent and fairly well established population of Ptarmigan.

Black grouse:

Braemore has started to see the black grouse return and further initiatives will be made to assist the species in regaining strength.

Grouse:

Grouse are resident. The population is likely comparable to most of the adjacent areas on the west and north west coast.

Squirrels, Wolves, Foxes etc.
